Prayer (Head sketch for Quantum Woman 2), 2009
Masonite, paper, and steel hardware
14” x 11” x 10” (36 cm x 30 cm x 25 cm)
This is a study for the head of a full size sculpture titled Quantum Woman. In its male counterpart, the Quantum Man, the slices are vertically oriented, which in quantum physics is associated with horizontal motion. For the female version I rotated the slices so that their orientation is horizontal, which is associated with motion in the up-down direction. I think about Quantum Woman as establishing a connection between earth and the heavens, whereas her male counterpart, going orthogonal to her, puts his energy into the earthly realm.
