Virus Capsid Protein, 2003

Cast and fabricated bronze, length 9" (23 cm)

This sculpture was inspired by a piece of a virus shell. I cast this piece in bronze, because this technique resembles the way a virus forces the infected cell to make multiple copies of itself. I used an aggressive chemical, hydrochloric acid to give the piece a toxic and ancient looking green patina, corresponding conceptually and visually to the disease bearing quality of viruses.
